3 things that disappoints me about Catholic mass goers

Just this noon, I attended  mass and got a bit annoyed by the distracting things that some Catholics do or act while inside the church. So, here's a list of the 3 things that disappoints me about mass goers. (And I know this does not only apply in one parish.)

1. "Please turn of your mobile phone or switch it to silent mode."

At times, we get reminded by the commentator before the mass begins. If you can't really switch it off, you can switch it to silent mode at least. It's distracting to hear phones (in full volume or ascending tone) to be ringing while the celebration is going on or in the middle of a good homily by the priest. What's more irritating sometimes is that some people ignore their ringing phones and wait for it to stop ringing. I mean, hello? Can you atleast press any key or cancel the call so that the sound will stop too? Some even dare to answer the texts or call. Considering it's an emergency, you can answer it in a discreet manner. The world does not need to know what your business is or what model of phone you have.

2. "Wear appropriate attire."

There are actually a lot of inappropriate clothing to wear inside church or while attending the mass but this is the most common of them all. The infamous SHORT PANTS.

The evolution of fashion just amazes me. But it's sad to realize that people nowadays doesn't even consider when and where to wear those outfits. I see ladies wearing short pants (the short shorts type, if you know what I mean cos I really don't know what it's called), plunging necklines, see through blouses. There's nothing wrong with those clothes actually if you are inside the mall. By all means, go ahead and do a fashion show! But you see, the church is not a mall nor is it a party. You just spend an hour or an hour and a half with the Lord in the celebration of the Holy Mass. You could atleast make yourself look presentable in the sense that you are still respectable and not distracting as you try to pull down your short shorts every now and then or pull up your plunging neck lines every 5 seconds.

3. "Observe proper behavior."

Aside from one person talking to another person while the mass is going on, what annoys me are kids that are playing and running in and around the church and the parents doesn't even seem to care.

I think one of the things that parents should teach their children about the church aside from it being the house of God is that it's not a playground. Some kids play around, chasing another kid or shouting. They also like balancing while walking in the kneelers. I know kids. I know they want to play. But parents should also know how to handle their kids when inside the church. The shouting is distracting. As much as we don't want to hear your child's voice and focus on what the priest is saying, unfortunately, we can still hear them (especially when they are right in front of us or at our back). What I usually do is give the kid a strong stare like giving them a message "keep quiet" (shut up is just too harsh).

I guess when it comes to child discipline, it's really a very challenging task to do and I commend those parents who are able to do a good job hoping that I will be able to do so as well when the time comes.

The church is not just any ordinary place where you can do anything you want to do and act in any way you want to. It's sacred and we should respect its sanctity. :)
