Scripture Reflection 4 "Everything is possible to one who has faith." - Mark 9:23

“Who among you is wise and understanding?” , the first reading asks us. And indeed this is a question that seems to be very easy yet very hard to answer. How can we even know if we are wise and understanding enough?

The reading tells what true wisdom is all about. Every day, we ask the Lord for wisdom. We ask for this gift and sometimes, we don’t fully understand what wisdom really is. If you look it up in the dictionary, wisdom means the ability to discern inner qualities and relationships. The kind of wisdom that Saint James is trying to tell us is the pure kind of wisdom. If one is doing work, he must do it with humility and without selfish ambitions.

I have been very busy these past few weeks. I even forgot it about making my reflection last February 7. My apologies for that. Nevertheless, I have been continuously reflecting and holding on to my faith.

Organizing a fun run, I can say is never easy. Easy to think of organizing one but I tell you, it was super hard. I cannot say it’s burdensome though. It is the kind of load where you are striving super hard to make it successful because you have a cause at hand.  We have a reason. We did not organize a fun run just for the heck of getting a good grade in our subject.  Moreover, we took the opportunity to be able to organize one technically as a project but more of charity. We could have thought of something easier and lighter. We could even thought of other groups that we can tap. But we did not. We stood to do the fun run for the Kythe kids.

Just this year, I have shared few cherished moments with those kids. I personally thank Lanzi for inviting me to share my time and blessings with them. With those shared moments, I have learned to be thankful with everything that God is giving me. In an assignment article I wrote about celebrating Christmas, I quote “In a celebration like this one where you can see the simple joys of the cancer kids, one can surely think of how blessed they can be. Oftentimes, this kind of celebration serves as a reminder to us that as people who are more privilege than these kids are, we must also learn to extend our arms to them.”

And as the Psalm says, “ The precepts of the Lord give joy to the heart”, I affirm that what we have done for the benefit of the Kythe kids is God’s command. We did it out of charity and charity is love. And God is love.

Our group encountered a lot of challenges during the preparation. We are even about to breakdown at some point. But you know what kept us going? Faith.

The gospel tells us about the same exact thing. The man answered Jesus, “…It has often thrown him into fire and into water to kill him. But if you can do anything, have compassion on us and help us.” Then Jesus answered, “If you can!' Everything is possible to one who has faith."

Jesus asks us to believe in him and to trust him that he will never leave us nor forsake us (Deuteronomy 31:6). Every chance I get to pray and talk to God, I tell him to be with us throughout the preparation. I held on to my faith that God will provide. It is written in Lamentations 3:22-23 that, “Because of the LORD’s great love we are not consumed, for his compassions never fail. They are new every morning; great is your faithfulness.” Our God is a compassionate God. He hears us and never wants us to experience so much difficulty.

What he asks of us is only one thing, that is to keep our faith and continue praying. Our faith has been shaken every once in a while. I remember having this conversation with my mom:

Me: “Ma, sa tingin mo… Kaya naming ito?”
Mom:  “Kaya niyo man yan. Basta i-pray mo lang parati.”
Me: “Ginapray ko man parati, Ma.”
Mom: “Eh di wag mo i-doubt yung prayer mo.”

Then I realized in that moment that my faith has been shaken. I doubted God’s capacity to give us a successful event. At once, I pushed the doubts and questions aside.

From that moment on, I have been fervently and wholeheartedly praying that God will give us the desires of our heart. And indeed, faith can move the mountains.

The night before the event, it was raining. We were afraid that it will continue to rain and the event will not push through or that maybe it will push through but only a few people will come. But the Lord answered our prayers. An hour before the assembly time of the run, the rain stopped. God is that amazing!

The fun run ended and we got a total of 709 runners. Though we were not able to reach our target of 1000 runners, God gave us a very good and considerate race management team. And we knew everything was enough and our labors was finally, totally paid off.

I may have a lot in my mind during those days – fun run, thesis, cheer dance, web design and other personal issues, I never fail to remind myself that: “I may have these big problems and concerns, but hey! I HAVE A BIGGER GOD. And He NEVER leaves me.”
