The first mobile phone
is known to be the one discovered by the engineers from Bell Labs in the year
1946. The first hand-held mobile phone for use on a cellular network was
manufactured by Motorola. It has been 66 years since the beginning of the
invention. It was long before I was born and long before I had my eyes on a
gadget called “mobile phone”.
Mobile phones, also
known as cellular phones, have the main and common purpose of allowing people
to communication to each other through a distance. It was a very convenient
discovery and invention since it was very helpful not just in allowing personal
connection between families whose family member/s works far from home. It was
the aid used in transporting information and details between businesses and
industries.
We are now in the 21st
century and a lot already came to be. From bulky mobile phones to smart phones,
the mobile device industry continues to develop more of the same product with
the latest feature for every body’s needs and convenience.
I cannot even remember
the model of my first ever mobile phone. All I know is that it was manufactured
by Panasonic. I was very shy to use it because few of my classmates and friends
have the Nokia 5110 already and I have a Panasonic-out-of-the-trend type of
phone. It did not take long before I finally gave up on my Panasonic and just
borrowed my grandfather’s Nokia 5110 for game purposes. The very next official,
going-with-the-trend phone I had was a Nokia 3210. I liked it and it prevented
me from doing what I used to do with my aunt which was to cut out a picture of
a mobile phone from a newspaper ad and paste it to a piece of cardboard and
pretend that it was a real one. Funny and quite pathetic but we enjoyed the
illusion made.
Everybody seems to be
enjoying the possession of such gadget. I can say it’s a multipurpose device.
In general, it has been a very convenience means of communication. It is also
used for distributing and selling media content such as ringtones, logos,
picture messages, games, jokes, horoscopes and others of the same kind.
Eventually, mobile
phones have presented more improvements. One of these upgraded features is the
mobile banking. Who would ever think that you can actually do banking within
your finger’s reach, anytime, anywhere?
Mobile phones play an
essential role of being a tracking device too. I am not sure though if this
feature of every mobile phone is being used especially in solving crimes. Or it
could be that our country still does not have enough knowledge and equipments
to support this kind of tracking.
Moreover, with all the
benefits that mobile phones have, it also have its downside or disadvantages.
Mobile phones is said
to be dangerous to our health due to its usage of electromagnetic radiation.
Researchers believe that its effect to the health is a long term risk. The
radiation from these gadgets is classified to be “carcinogenic hazard”. There
was even a report that the usage of mobile phones showed 40% increase of the
risk of brain cancer for those considered heavy users. Also, mobile phones can
transmit infectious diseases through its frequent contact with ones hands.
In our very dynamic
world, we can expect more improvements and upgrading of our technological
devices. It does not refer to just the mobile phones but also other gadgets.
Likewise, we must always be vigilant enough that in every advantage, there is
always a disadvantage. We just have to know how to deal with them properly. It
will always depend on how we handle things.
Life offers us a
numerous ways of convenience. It’s up to us to figure out how, when and where
we will use them.
